Savoring Life, Writing Through It
Posted on September 12, 2024 by drinkinlife

Reading has always been my favorite pastime, a way to escape into different worlds, explore new perspectives, and experience a range of feelings as well as emotions. Many of you may be familiar with my Drink In Life Books Series, where I select a book and pair it with food and wine or cocktails, while diving deeper into the book and sometimes including interviews with the author. While I’m still working on some new titles for that series, I wanted to share another new series with you, Wine and Words; Perfect Pairings for Book Lovers.
As an avid reader, I often find myself immersed in one or two books a week, mostly leaning toward historical fiction, mysteries, and, of course, stories that revolve around wine, both fiction and non-fiction. Over the years, my reading time tends to be in the evening or on the weekend, so the time reading is even better spent when I pour myself a carefully selected glass of wine. For this reason, I was inspired to create “Wine and Words” a series dedicated to celebrating the perfect pairing of fine reads with memorable wines.

In “Wine and Words,” I’ll be sharing some of my favorite books, paired with the perfect wines to enhance the overall reading experience. So, whether you’re a big book nerd like me, who loves to read several books every week, or someone who enjoys disappearing for a few hours into a good book, this series is designed to make your reading ritual even more delicious. Each pairing is thoughtfully curated to match the tone, style, character, and setting of the book, ensuring that your taste buds are as engaged as your imagination.
Is it overindulgent to sip wine and read a great novel at the same time?
Certainly not in my book!
Why pair books with wine? Just as a good wine can elevate a meal, the right wine can enhance the experience of a good book. Some books are bubbly with good feelings and charm, some are an acquired taste, and others are bold and intense. By pairing a book with a wine that mirrors its characteristics, you can often create a more immersive and enjoyable reading environment.

With “Wine and Words,” I’ll be exploring four distinct categories each series: timeless classic novels, gripping thrillers and mysteries, evocative historical novels, and new favorite books that I could not put down. By thoughtfully selecting wines that complement the essence of each title, I hope to create a harmonious experience that delights both the mind and the palate.
This journey begins with classic novels, those timeless narratives that have captivated readers for generations. These books offer themes and characters that resonate deeply, standing the test of time with their universal appeal. Pairing a classic novel with a wine that reflects its setting, tone and themes can enhance the reading experience, immersing us in the cultural nuances and emotions of the story.

Classics are the books we go back to again and again, much like a favorite wine that never disappoints. These timeless narratives have a unique way of drawing us in with their enduring themes and unforgettable characters. The subtle notes of the wine echo the sophistication and charm of the novel, making every page turn a delightful exploration of a bygone era. As I delve into my first classic book selection, “The Handmaid’s Tale,” let’s uncork a wine that enhances the experience and complements the profound depth of this remarkable story.

“The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood is a gripping dystopian novel set in the near future, where the United States has been replaced by the theocratic Republic of Gilead. The story follows Offred, a Handmaid whose sole purpose is to bear children for the ruling class. Stripped of her identity and rights, Offred navigates a society marked by oppression, surveillance, and strict gender roles. Through her poignant narrative, Atwood explores themes of power, control, and resistance, offering a chilling commentary on the potential consequences of extremism and the enduring resilience of the human spirit.
The dystopian world of “The Handmaid’s Tale” is brought to life not only in the pages of Margaret Atwood’s novel but also in the critically acclaimed series on Hulu. The show’s gripping portrayal of a society governed by totalitarianism and the fight for freedom is compelling and intellectually stimulating.
I first read The Handmaid’s Tale in 1985, the year it was released, and its story profoundly affected me, prompting deep reflections on politics, the individuals who govern our countries, and the laws they implement. The novel’s chilling portrayal of a dystopian regime made me critically examine the power structures and policies that shape our society, altering my perspective on governance and personal freedoms. Since then, I have reread it twice and have also read its sequel, “The Testaments.” Although not as old as many classics, I felt this was the perfect title to begin this series with due to its lasting impact and relevance.
To enhance the experience of The Handmaid’s Tale, I recommend pairing it with a robust, full-bodied red wine, such as a Petite Sirah, known for its deep, intricate flavors and rich complexity. Much like the intricate and layered narrative of the novel, Petite Sirah offers depth and complexity with its bold flavors and rich aromas. Its intense flavors of dark berries, black pepper, and hints of chocolate reflect the novel’s themes of intensity and thought-provoking darkness.

Moreover, Petite Sirah’s robust profile symbolizes the resilience and strength portrayed by the characters in “The Handmaid’s Tale,” making it a fitting companion to this enduring story of resistance.
One of my favorite Petite Sirahs from California is the 2019 Stags Leap Petite Sirah. I am a sucker for a memorable Petite Sirah and following Zinfandel, Petite Sirah from California is one of my favorite red varietals.
Like many Petite Sirahs this one greets you with a deep, inky purple color that hints at the rich experience to come. The nose is immediately enticing, offering aromas of blackberry, blueberry, and plum, layered with notes of black pepper, dark chocolate, and a subtle hint of vanilla from the oak aging. The first sip reveals a full-bodied wine with robust tannins and a balanced acidity that makes it incredibly satisfying. Flavors of ripe dark berries dominate, complemented by spicy undertones and a touch of espresso that lingers on the long, velvety finish.

For lovers of suspense, thrillers and mysteries offer gripping plots, intricate puzzles, and unexpected twists. These stories keep us on the edge of our seats, eager to uncover the next clue or revelation. Pairing a thriller or mystery with a bold, intense wine heightens the suspenseful atmosphere, elevating the reading experience with each sip and turn of the page.

An intense wine can perfectly complements the immersive experience of a gripping novel and just as these wines are characterized by their robust, layered flavors and complex aromas, so too are the novels filled with intricate plots and vivid characterizations. A wine’s powerful profile—marked by deep, rich notes and a compelling finish often parallels a suspenseful novel’s intense narrative. This synergy between the wine and the story creates a multidimensional experience, mirroring the intensity and intrigue of the story with the wine. It creates a sensory journey that captivates both your taste buds and your imagination like the first book from this genre does. In “Dark Matter,” we’ll explore how the right wine can elevate the suspense and complexity of the narrative, accentuating every revelation and surprise.
“Dark Matter” by Blake Crouch is a mind-bending thriller that explores the intricacies of alternate realities and the choices that define our lives. The story follows Jason Dessen, a physics professor who is abducted and thrust into a parallel universe where his life is drastically different. As Jason navigates this new reality, he must confront profound questions about identity, love, and the road not taken. With relentless suspense and endless twists, “Dark Matter” keeps readers on the edge of their seats, questioning the very nature of reality and the consequences of our decisions. Dark Matter is also now a series on Apple TV+, so you can enjoy the thrilling adaptation on page and on the screen.
I personally listened to the audiobook of “Dark Matter”, which was a fantastic way to experience the intricate and complex story, making the journey even more immersive. As I work out, cook meals, tidied up the house, or spent hours tending to my garden, the voice of the narrator transported me into the mind-bending world of quantum mechanics and alternate realities. For me audiobooks are a way for me to savor the joy of reading while seamlessly integrating it into the rhythm of my daily life.

To fully appreciate the twists and turns of “Dark Matter“, I suggest pairing it with an adventurous and intriguing Zinfandel. Much like the thrilling and mind-bending narrative of “Dark Matter“, a Zinfandel offers daring flavors and complexity that keep you intrigued with every sip. Its dynamic layers of ripe fruit, spice, and occasional hints of chocolate or tobacco reflect the unpredictable twists and turns in the story. As the book captivates readers with its intense and fast-paced plot, Zinfandel’s rich and full-bodied profile enhances the experience, making it a perfect companion for this sci-fi thriller.

My selection for “Dark Matter,” is a Dry Creek Vineyards Old Vine Zinfandel. The Zinfandels from this part of California really caught my attention during my visit to the Dry Creek Valley last year. Dry Creek Vineyard, established in 1972, is renowned for its commitment to sustainable farming and producing exceptional wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Dry Creek Valley.
Their Old Vine Zinfandel is sourced from vines that are over 50 years old, which contribute to the wine’s complexity and depth. This Zinfandel, a staple in my wine cellar, stood out as a perfect companion for a gripping, reality-bending novel like “Dark Matter”.
The Dry Creek Vineyards Old Vine Zinfandel presents a brilliant ruby color in the glass, with an enticing bouquet of blackberries, dark cherries, and hints of spice.

On the palate, it delivers bold and concentrated flavors of ripe plum, black pepper, and a touch of mocha, balanced by a lively acidity and smooth, well-integrated tannins. The finish is long and satisfying, leaving a lasting impression of dark fruit and a subtle earthiness.

Historical novels transport us to different eras, offering vivid portrayals of historical events and figures. These books bring history to life with rich storytelling and detailed settings, allowing us to experience the past in a way that is both educational and entertaining. Pairing a historical novel with a wine that evokes its time period can enhance the reading experience, immersing us in the sights, sounds, and flavors of history.
The rich narratives and intricate settings of historical novels are best enjoyed with wines that share a similar depth and complexity. Just as these books transport us to different times, a well-chosen wine can evoke the essence of the era depicted, creating a multi-sensory experience that deepens our connection to the story. The nuanced flavors and elegant profile of such a wine can mirror the detailed, refined storytelling of the novel, making every sip and turn of the page a journey back in time. The first book in this genre, “The Indigo Girl“, captures the historical depth and rich storytelling that often pairs beautifully with a carefully chosen wine.

“The Indigo Girl” by Natasha Boyd is a historical novel set during the 18th-century South Carolina, centers around the remarkable true story of Eliza Lucas Pinckney. The narrative follows Eliza as she in defies societal expectations and navigates the complexities of plantation life to cultivate indigo, a revolutionary cash crop crucial to the region’s economy. Amidst personal challenges and societal constraints, Eliza’s determination and ingenuity lead her to success, showcasing her pioneering spirit and contributions to agricultural innovation in America’s early history. Boyd’s novel vividly portrays Eliza’s journey, capturing both the historical intricacies and personal triumphs that define her legacy.

Historical fiction like this novel always gives me something to think about and makes me realize how little we are really taught about the history of the United States, especially when it comes to the contributions of women. “The Indigo Girl” opened my eyes to the untold stories of women like Eliza Lucas Pinckney, whose ingenuity and resilience have shaped our nation’s history in profound ways. As I delved into Boyd’s richly detailed portrayal of Eliza’s life, I was reminded of the countless other women whose stories remain hidden, waiting to be discovered and celebrated. This genre not only enriches my understanding of the past but also inspires me to seek out and share these powerful narratives.
To complement the American historical richness of The Indigo Girl, a Riesling feels like the perfect choice. This versatile wine is known for its vibrant acidity, aromatic intensity, and ability to reflect the terroir where it is grown.
Just as the novel brings to life the resilient spirit and ingenuity of its protagonist, Eliza Lucas Pinckney, the Riesling’s bright, refreshing flavors and complex aroma evoke the lush landscapes and rich heritage of 18th-century South Carolina. The wine’s balance of sweetness and acidity echoes the nuanced storytelling, making each sip a reflection of the era’s elegance and resilience, enhancing the reader’s journey through history.

Riesling has a long and storied history in America, particularly in regions like New York’s Finger Lakes, where it has flourished due to the cool climate and mineral-rich soils. This history mirrors the rich, historical backdrop of “The Indigo Girl” exploration of the land, the cultivation of indigo, and Eliza’s overcoming of numerous obstacles.

For this pairing, I have chosen the Dr. Konstantin Frank 2019 Dry Riesling from the Finger Lakes of New York. Dr. Konstantin Frank is a pioneer in American viticulture, especially known for his contributions to growing European grape varieties in the United States. This particular Riesling offers a crisp and clean profile with flavors of green apple, lime, and a touch of minerality. Its vibrant acidity and aromatic complexity make it an ideal companion for “The Indigo Girl“.

In this Wine and Words journey, I want to celebrate the diversity and vibrancy of storytelling, this available variety often leads to finding some books that have an irresistible pull, grabbing our attention and keeping us hooked from start to finish. These are the titles that make us feel like we can’t turn the pages fast enough, keeping us up late into the night, desperate to know what happens next. Whether it’s a classic we’re discovering for the first time or a newly released bestseller, there’s nothing like getting lost in a book you can’t put down.
“You know you’ve read a good book when you turn the last page and feel a little as if you have lost a friend.” – Paul Sweeney
These unputdownable books boast compelling characters and a gripping narrative, drawing us into their worlds and making us feel deeply connected to their stories. They captivate our imagination, stir our emotions, and provide a welcome escape from the everyday. The thrill of discovering a book that resonates so profoundly is a joy that every book lover cherishes.
Much like these books, wine has the power to transport us to another place and time. Each sip reveals a new layer, akin to turning the pages of a novel, uncovering complex flavors and aromas that tell a story of their own. The rich, velvety texture of a well-aged red wine or the crisp, refreshing notes of a chilled white can evoke a range of emotions, mirroring the highs and lows of a captivating plot. Just as a well-crafted story lingers in our minds long after we’ve finished reading, a fine wine leaves a lasting impression on our palate, inviting us to savor the experience and return to it again and again.

The harmony of these elements in both literature and wine creates a deeply satisfying experience, enriching our lives and connecting us to the world in profound ways. My first pick for this genre, which perfectly embodies these qualities, is the captivating read that has captured the hearts of many: “Where the Crawdads Sing“. This novel’s intricate storytelling and vivid descriptions draw readers into its world just as a fine wine engages the senses, offering a rich and immersive experience that lingers long after the final page.
This compelling novel tells the story of Kya Clark, known as the “Marsh Girl,” who grows up isolated in the marshes of North Carolina. Abandoned by her family and left to fend for herself from a young age, Kya becomes intimately familiar with the natural world around her. The narrative unfolds as a dual timeline, alternating between Kya’s coming-of-age story in the 1950s and a murder investigation in the 1960s where Kya becomes a prime suspect.

Delia Owens‘ descriptive prose vividly captures the beauty and solitude of the marshlands while exploring themes of loneliness, resilience, and the impact of human connections. The novel became a runaway bestseller, captivating readers with its atmospheric setting and haunting portrayal of Kya’s survival against the odds. In addition to its literary success, “Where the Crawdads Sing” has also been adapted into a feature film, bringing Kya’s story to life on the big screen and further solidifying its place in contemporary literature.
The dual timelines of Kya’s coming-of-age journey and the gripping mystery that unfolds later in her life kept me eagerly turning pages late into the night, driven to uncover the truth alongside her. While I understand that opinions on this book vary, for me, it was a story that lingered in my thoughts long after I finished reading, prompting reflection on themes of loneliness, resilience, and the enduring power of nature.
I recommend pairing it with a crisp and refreshing Rosé. Known for their harmonious balance of fruitiness and acidity, a well-crafted Rosé will beautifully complement the themes of nature and survival of “Where the Crawdads Sing.” The light, vibrant character of a Rosé mirrors the atmospheric setting of the marsh, reflecting its vivid descriptions of flora and fauna.

A Rosé offers versatility and a refreshing uplift that aligns with the novel’s emotional depth and hopeful moments. The wine’s rejuvenating qualities parallel the story’s depiction of nature’s transformative power, making it a perfect companion for delving into Kya’s world.
For “Where the Crawdads Sing“, I paired it with Whispering Angel Rosé from the Côtes de Provence in France. This popular rosé is celebrated for its fresh, crisp flavors of strawberry, peach, and citrus, accompanied by a light, elegant body. Its refreshing character enfolds and uplifts the natural beauty and outdoor settings vividly depicted in Delia Owens’ novel.

This wine with its delicate and nuanced flavors also reflects the serene and unspoiled landscape of the North Carolina marshlands, where the protagonist, Kya Clark, finds solace and a sense of belonging in the natural world around her.
“Language is wine upon the lips” – Virginia Woolf
Much like a well-crafted novel, a great wine has depth, character, and the ability to transport you to another place. As John Milton eloquently put it, “A good book is the precious lifeblood of a master spirit, embalmed and treasured up on purpose to a life beyond life.” I look forward to continuing this journey of pairing wines with words, exploring new literary landscapes, and discovering wines that enrich these experiences.

Have you ever come across a wine or a specific varietal that surprised you with its perfect pairing for a specific genre of literature?

I invite you to join in the excitement of “Wine and Words” by sharing your own favorite novel and wine pairings!
